This is "PLUTO," the 98th Bomb Group B-24, Liberator, that was copiloted by Lt. Eugene M.
Thomas, Jr. when the plane was ambushed by a German fighter over North Africa. The pilot of "PLUTO" was seriously wounded
in the attack and Lt. Thomas was wounded in the arm. Ignoring his wounds, Lt. Thomas landed "PLUTO" successfully saving the
plane and the crew. He was awarded the Silver Star for "bravery in action" and the Purple Heart.
